Frequently Asked Questions about skincare and our products
What is a skin "type" or skin "state"?
Skin type is the current state that your skin is in. Although skin type is determined partly by genes, we believe skin changes with the climate/seasons, diet, and age. Your skin may be combination (oily and dry) as well as break out prone during the summer, but might become more dry in the winter. Reassessing the condition of your skin on a seasonal basis will help you find the best skincare ritual. Find out more about our skincare philosophy here.
Is everything you make natural?
Yes! Almost all our ingredients are used in their naturally occuring form. Some ingredients, such as vitamin E and CoQ10 are naturally derived and naturally found in nature. The only ingredients that we use that are not always derived from natural sources our Vitamin C and Vitamin B3. We chose to integrate these into our skincare products as they are extremely effective, they have a proven safety record and they are naturally occurring vitamins.
Are your products 100% certified organic?
Our products are made with certified organic ingredients (either USDA or Ecocert certification). Although many of our products are in fact 100% organic, some contain wildcrafted or conventional ingredients (usually less than 5%).
Our products themselves are not certified organic but we are working on it!
For a confirmation about the certification of ingredients in your product, look up the batch # here.
Are your products cruelty free?
Absolutely. We are Leaping Bunny certified and most of our products are vegan. We never test on animals and never source from suppliers that do.
Are your products vegan?
Many of our products are vegan but not all (see below).
We use organic honey and organic beeswax in some of our products (Hibiscus Exfoliating Mud and Night Regenerative Balm).
We use organic milk and yogurt in some of our products (Coffee + Cream soap, White Clay Brightening Mask, Hibiscus Exfoliating Mud)
Are your products gluten free?
Yes, all our products are gluten free (including those containing oats) and do not come into contact with gluten.
Where do you source your ingredients?
We try to be as transparent as possible about our sourcing. We source from small farms and distilleries when we can, and love working with other small businesses. We also try to source within the USA but many ingredients such as Cupuacu butter, Orange blossom water and coconut oil need to be imported from all over the world. For more information about the country of origin of the ingredients in your product, look up your batch # here.
What is the shelf life of your products?
Unopened, our products will last 2 years or more. The hand stamped use by date on our products indicates the date by which you should use your product unopened. Once opened, we recommend you use the product within 6 months, or before the use by date, whichever comes first!
Can I still use your product if it is past the use by date?
Because everything we make is 100% natural, the potency of the ingredients in the product diminishes with time. Although our product may still be in good condition past the use by date, we cannot vow for it's effectiveness.
Why did you switch from clear to amber glass bottles?
Although clear and frosted bottles are pretty and showcase the beauty of the products, these bottles do not protect our potions from light. Like heat and time, light degrades the quality and potency of natural ingredients and leads to a shorter shelf life and a possibly ineffective or irritating product. Since our skincare products are natural in nature, to ensure that you receive the highest quality product we felt it was necessary to use the most protective packaging.
Is your packaging eco-friendly?
We package all of our liquid products in glass bottles which are recyclable and reusable. We use eco-friendly printers that help us choose the best materials and inks to print our labels. Our soap labels are biodradable and recyclable.
What if I want to use products that are for acne but I have dry skin?
Our oily/acne products are best suited for people with oily skin. Everyone, however, can have breakouts! If you have dry, breakout-prone skin, we recommend mixing an oily/acne cleanser and toner, with a dry/mature or all skin type moisturizer. Still stumped? Visit our How To Choose Products page.
Which products are suitable for sensitive skin?
All of our products are formulated with sensitive skin in mind. You should, however, stick to products that are recommended for your skin. You should also pay attention to the ingredient list if you have allergies. If you have questions about how to choose a product that is right for you, check out the How To Choose Products section or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Can I use your soaps on my face?
Yes! We recommend it! All our soaps (except the bath + body selection) are formulated to be used as gentle facial cleansers. They will not dry out your skin like commercial "soaps" as they contain moisturizing oils.
Will a facial oil or oil-based serum make me look greasy?
Nope :) Our facial oils and serums are designed to absorb into your skin quickly, delivering nutrients deep within the skin without leaving your skin looking oily or greasy. We recommend massaging 2-6 drops (depending on your skin's needs). We like to apply the drops by placing them in our palm and then using our (clean!) fingers to apply the oil onto our face.
Is it safe to use oil as a moisturizer if I have oily skin or breakout prone skin?
Absolutely. Our oils/serums with a blue label are lightweight and will help tame an oily complexion and break outs. If you have never tried a facial oil, you are in for a treat!
Can I use your facial oils or face balm as an eye cream or eye serum?
The best options we offer that can be used as an eye product are the Night Regenerative Balm, Rose Nourishing Serum and the Simple Facial Oil. Any of our oils/balm can be used around the eyes, although it is important to note that all of our facials oils except the Simple Facial Oil are made with essential oils. Essential oils may cause irritation and a slight stinging sensation if they come in contact with your eyes. For this reason, we advise that if you would like to use one of our products around the eyes, to only apply it on the sides and below the eyes in such a manner that the product will not come in contact with your eyes.
Can I use your products if I am pregnant?
Most of our products are safe to use during pregnancy although we highly recommend checking with your doctor or midwife. Ingredients that we use in our products that might be considered unsafe for use during pregnancy are essential oils, comfrey and willow bark extract. Although we consider the essential oil levels and the comfrey infusion in our facial care products to be at a safe level, to be extra safe, here is a list of our products that do not contain essential oils, comfrey or willow bark:
Rose Hydrating Toner (can be used as a cleanser with a cotton ball as well)
Hibiscus Exfoliating Mud (can be used as a mask, scrub or cleanser)
Here is the skincare ritual our founder Dominique used during her pregnancy: "I used the Rose toner and hibiscus mud as my cleanser (toner in the morning, hibiscus mud at night in the shower). For a moisturizer, I used the Simple Facial Oil (although this does contain a comfrey leaf infusion but no essential oils) in the morning and the Rose Nourishing Serum (contains both a comfrey infusion and essential oils) at night. Once a week I did a steam followed by one of our clay masks"
I am new to natural skincare. How do I use your skincare products?
Welcome to the bright side! :) We recommend that you use our products in the following steps, morning and night:
Step 1 - Cleanse with one of our complexion soaps. Step 2 - Tone. Step 3 - Moisturize.
1-2x per week we recommend that you use treatments (mask, scrub and/or steam) for your additional skincare needs.
You can learn more about how to use our products and about our skincare philosophy on the Our Philosophy page.
Are your products biodegradable?
Yes. All our products, including our soaps, are biodegradable. However, please keep in mind that all biodegradable soaps need to be in contact with soil to biodegrade (soap does not biodegrade in water alone).
