What You Need to Know About Dry Skin

Dry or Dehydrated?

There are two underlying causes that can result in dry skin. One is lack of water (aka dehydrated skin) and one is lack of lipids (aka dry skin). Depending on the reason for your dry skin state, you will want to approach treatment differently. The first step is to identify the cause of your dry skin. Ask yourself these questions to help identity what type of dry skin you may be experiencing:

1. Is my skin Itchy? Dull? Congested? When I gently pinch my cheek, do fine lines appear? → Dehydrated skin
2. Is my skin flaky or itchy? Does my skin tend to feel tight and dry easily? → Dry skin

DRY SKIN | This type of dry skin is caused by a lack of lipids. Dry skin types are genetically predisposed to produce less sebum than a normal skin type and are most prone to this type of dry skin.

DEHYDRATED SKIN | This skin state is skin that lacks water. "But I drink plenty of water during the day!" you might be thinking. Dehydrated skin is also caused by several other factors like excessive cleansing, harsh products, & environmental factors. It's also important to note that skin can be both oily & dehydrated.

A Simple Skincare Ritual for Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin craves hydrous nutrition & moisturizers help skin retain water.

Cleanse: Skip AM suds to avoid over-cleansing which exacerbates dryness. Rinse with water in the AM & cleanse with our Aloe + Rose Clay Soap in the PM.

Exfoliate: Give your skin gentle exfoliation using the Hibiscus Mud 2-3 times per week. Assist your skin in removing dead skin cells that may block proper absorption of nutrient-rich moisturizers & water. If your skin is highly sensitized or inflamed, reduce to 1x per week or skip until skin improves.

Hydrate! Our Rose Essential Hydration Mist & Vitamin C Regenerative Balm are dry skin’s best friend, day & night. Switch up your application for optimal results:

AM: Create a nutrient-rich emulsion using both products in the palm of your hands & massage into your face & neck.
PM: Generously mist skin with the toner and massage a thick layer of the balm into skin. Let it absorb for 20 minutes before going to sleep.

Dry skin requires gentle cleansing & fatty acids to replenish & protect.

Cleanse: Skip AM suds to avoid over-cleansing which exacerbates dryness. Cleanse with the Vitamin C Regenerative Balm in the evening.

Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate using the Hibiscus Mud 1-2 times per week to keep pores clear & ready to absorb nutrient-rich oils. Avoid using too many harsh acids in your routine to prevent the stripping of natural oil.

Moisturize: Look for essential fatty acid-rich containing plant oils like the blend in our Rose Nourishing Facial Oil & Vitamin C Balm.

AM: Emulsify the Rose Mist & Rose Facial Oil  together in your hands & press into your face & neck.

PM: Follow the same steps for AM. For skin that is feeling extra dry, swap out the serum & apply the Night Regenerative Balm to deeply hydrate & prevent Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) while you sleep.
